World Animal Day

This Saturday the 4th of October is World Animal Day. In honour of this special day, one of our members - Linda C - will be holding a peaceful protest outside the South African Embassy on Earlsfort Terrace. Lions are still hunted for sport in South Africa. Linda would be delighted for anyone with an interest in standing up for these beautiful creatures to join her from 3 till 4pm. You can text her on 087-3425769 (no calls please).

Interested in animal welfare but can't attend Saturday? Let us or Linda know as she would love to set up a small, informal discussion group.

Dublin Bus Community Spirit Awards grant Gateway €2000 to make a film

Gateway Project awarded €2,000 grant to build skills and leadership through a film-making project from Dublin Bus!

Gateway applied to the Dublin Bus Community Spirit Initiative earlier this year seeking a grant for members to engage in a film-making project for Gateway.

We applied for funding so that members could engage in leadership and skills development programme through film making.  The goal is for members to learn the skills to make a film all about Gateway and the wonderful work we do to support inclusion and positive mental health.  The funding for this programme will give members a chance to build their skills, confidence and leadership in the project and will produce an important information film that we can use in the future.

Last night we attended the award ceremony to find out the great news. It was a rather fancy evening in the Mansion House and terrific to hear about all the great community groups and organisations that also received funding.

Maura, Oliver D, Ann Marie and Fionn represented Gateway.  We had a fab night and met some interesting people like Niall Quinn.

We say a big thank you to Dublin Bus for caring about mental health and supporting our fabulous project.

Onwards and upwards folks!

Tell Government to Invest in Mental Health Services in Budget 2015.

Mental Health Reform are working hard to make sure that Mental Health Services get the much needed funding that has been promised in the upcoming budget. One in seven adults in Ireland will have experienced a mental health difficulty in the last year. It is important that the Government can see how many people are behind this, and so Mental Health Reform are gathering signatures across the country.

You can sign their petition here, and you can also volunteer a couple of hours of your time to gather even more signatures. Check out the list of petition days where you could lend a hand. In particular you might be interested in going along to Trinity College on the 15th of September between 10am and 4pm (you don't need to stay all day), Dublin Institute of Technology on the 18th of September, Croke Park on the 21st of Septmeber (All Ireland Football Final!), and UCD on the 24th of September.

Housing Issues

Have you had difficulties with housing? (Getting it, keeping it, feeling secure in it...) This can be a stress for many people. The Gateway Newsletter team are interested in hearing about people's experiences for an upcoming article. If you have a story you would like to share please get in touch.

You can email thegatewaynewsletter@gmail.com or come to the drop-in on Thursdays between 2:30 and 4:30 and talk to us. (You can also phone 01-4965558 and leave a message with reception for Ali). Your information will be kept confidential, and if you wish to contribute anonymously that's fine too. If you have experienced problems there are probably many others going through similar difficulties, and it may be a help to everyone to know that they are not alone. Please get in touch!

Members' Outing

Would you like to visit an exhibition in the Chester Beatty Library? Some Gateway members have planned a nice afternoon out for Wednesday the 10th of September. If you are interested you can meet them either at 1pm in Café Moda in Rathmines, or at 1:30pm at the Dublin Castle Gates on Dame Street. Any Gateway members are very welcome to come along!

This is a members' outing and it won't be attended by any Project Workers. Look out for Maura at the gates of Dublin Castle (at 1:30pm), or any other Gateway members in Café Moda (at 1pm) Check out the Chester Beatty Library website here.
