National Demonstration for Mental Health - Thursday, April, 28th, 2016.

Howdy folks,

The message below this one came from Dr. Shari McDaid, Director of Mental Health Reform.

Did you know that our government is planning to divert €12 Million in funding away from the Mental Health budget???

Having worked for just over a year in Gateway, I know that we’re  not going to take that lying down!!!!

Drop-in tomorrow will be open, but will be operating on a skeleton crew because the rest of the team will be at the protest – would you like to join them?

This protest will take place Tomorrow, Thursday 28th April  from 12:30pm outside the Kildare Street entrance to Dáil Eireann. Volunteers are also needed from 12 noon to help prepare placards etc.

Please let us know if you would like to join us!

Let’s make our voices heard! Loud and proud! This is not OK!

All the best folks,

John M.

You have probably heard reports that €12 million is being diverted from the mental health budget to other areas of the health service.

This is NOT OK. We need to send a strong message that mental health must be a priority for the next government.

Join the Union of Students in Ireland and Mental Health Reform for a demonstration on Thursday April 28th at 12.30pm, outside Dáil Eireann (Kildare Street Entrance), in Dublin.

If you can't make it to Kildare St, you can still gather locally to show your support and share your event photos on social media. Take a selfie or organise a group photo with your colleagues, friends, fellow students etc. Make sure to use the hashtag #IAmAReason in your post.
Register your interest here.

Hope to see you there,
Shari

FOOD AND HEALTH PROJECT
Healthy Food Made Easy Project/Healthy Heart/Cool Dude Programme/Weaning Workshops

As you may be aware the Healthy Food Made Easy Project has been in the Ballyfermot/Chapelizod Area for the last 10 years.  Our catchment area includes Ballyfermot/Chapelizod, Dublin 12,8,6 and Dublin 2. The project is a joint initiative between Ballyfermot/Chapelizod Partnership and the Health Promotion Service, Tallaght, HSE Dublin Mid–Leinster. The focus of the project is community nutrition; local people have been trained as Peer Leaders to support people in their community who are interested in healthier eating, particularly where cost is a consideration.

We now have four programmes to offer to participants:

Healthy Food Made Easy – The course has six sessions which include practical cooking as well as sensible suggestions and ideas.  The main goal is to help improve people’s access to good quality information that can be put into practice in everyday life. The course includes a visit from the Community Dietitian, Health Promotion service on the 5th week.

Cool Dude Programme - The Cool Dude programme was developed to educate children on the importance of a healthy diet and to help improve the nutritional knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of young people. This programme targets children aged 8 - 14 years.

Healthy Hearts Programme – A three week follow up programme to Healthy food made easy.  This programme has three sessions which focus on nutrition, stress management and physical activity.

Weaning Workshops – We now offer Weaning Workshops to help new parents with the transition to solid food during the weaning process for young babies.  This is a Free once off workshop.   Contact Tracy for more information.

We are now taking bookings for the next courses which will commence from April 2016 Onwards, booking early essential!   I have enclosed some booklets for your information.  Any community groups interested in hosting the Healthy Food Made Easy/healthy Hearts/Cool Dude programmes in the near future can contact me for more information.

Kind regards

Tracy Kelly (01 6238088)
